Mumbai Indians openers R Levi and T Suman gave MI a good start with both adding 28 in 3.3 overs for the first wicket partnership. After Suman’s wicket, R Levi and Rohit Sharma played with ease and scored some quick runs. But Hodge got both Levi and Sharma to reduce MI to 68/3 in 8.2 overs. But this brought A Rayudu and K Pollard to the center who mercilessly attacked Rajasthan bowlers. They both added 96 runs in just 52 balls and took the team score past 150. Pollard got out after scoring 64 runs off 33 balls (6×4 4×6). A Rayudu 47 not out off 32 balls (1×4 3×6) and Harbhajan Singh (18 not out off 6 balls (1×4 2×6) helped Mumbai post 197/6 in 20 overs.
Chasing 198 to win, R Dravid and S Goswami both got out cheaply leaving RR struggling at 7/2. But A Rahane and Owais Shah took the charge and took the team score to 89 before A Rahane got out after scoring 40 off 31 balls (4×4 2×6). After this wicket, Owais Shah took the charge and hammered MI bowlers and it looked that he will take the game away from MI. But then an over from Lasith Malinga changed the game in MI favor as he got the wicket of Shah (76 runs off 42 balls, 5×4, 5×6) and J Botha in that over. Royals had scored 136/5 and still needed 62 more to win from 32 balls. The required rate was out of RR’s reach and they were all out for 170 in 19.4 overs 20 overs and thus they lost the match by 27 runs.
